Islam Pillars

Five Pillars Of Islam

Shahadah
Shahadah is the Islamic declaration of faith and the first pillar of Islam. It is a simple yet profound statement that expresses a Muslim’s belief in the oneness of God and the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Shahadah states: “Ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadur rasul Allah,” which means, “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.” Reciting and believing in the Shahadah with sincerity marks a person’s entry into Islam and serves as the foundation of a Muslim’s faith and way of life.
Salah
alah is the second pillar of Islam and refers to the obligatory prayers that Muslims perform five times a day. It is an act of worship that connects a believer directly with Allah, serving as a reminder of faith, discipline, and devotion. The five daily prayers—Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha—are performed at specific times throughout the day and night. Through Salah, Muslims express gratitude, seek guidance, and maintain spiritual purity. It strengthens the bond between the worshipper and Allah, fostering peace, humility, and mindfulness in daily life.
Zakah
Zakah is the third pillar of Islam and refers to the obligatory giving of a portion of one’s wealth to those in need. It is both a form of worship and a social responsibility that purifies one’s wealth and soul. Muslims who meet certain financial criteria are required to give 2.5% of their accumulated wealth each year to support the poor, the needy, and other specified groups. Zakah helps reduce inequality, promote compassion, and strengthen community bonds. By giving Zakah, Muslims express gratitude to Allah and acknowledge that all wealth ultimately belongs to Him.
Sawm
Sawm is the fourth pillar of Islam and refers to fasting during the holy month of Ramadan. It involves abstaining from food, drink, and sinful behavior from dawn until sunset. Sawm is not only a physical act of self-restraint but also a spiritual practice aimed at developing taqwa (God-consciousness), patience, and compassion for the less fortunate. Through fasting, Muslims purify their hearts, strengthen their faith, and learn self-discipline. The fast is broken each evening with a meal called iftar, and the month concludes with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a festival of gratitude and joy.
Hazz
Hazz is the fifth pillar of Islam and is the sacred pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah in Saudi Arabia. It is an act of worship that every adult Muslim who is physically and financially able must perform at least once in their lifetime. Hajj takes place during the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah and includes a series of rituals such as circling the Kaaba, standing in prayer at Arafat, and symbolically casting stones at pillars representing evil. The pilgrimage unites Muslims from all over the world in devotion and equality before Allah. Hajj teaches patience, humility, and the importance of sacrifice, reminding believers of their purpose and submission to God.
